For this weekends wedding I used poppy pods, silver brunia, dusty miller, and peach roses for the groom's boutonniere.
Wiring stems is important especially when assembling boutonnieres, to ensure that flowers or leaves won't fall off. It's also easier to work with if you want to create different shapes.
Here's how you wire a stem:
Top right hand corner photo: I have my 26 gauge florist wire, florist tape, wire cutters, and rose.
Top left hand corner photo: I cut my wire into thirds with my wire cutter. Next, I pierced the wire through the top of the stem.
Bottom right/left hand corner photo: I then moved the wires into place. Next, I used the florist tape to ensure that the wire is sturdy and easy to move around when it comes time to assemble the boutonniere.
{I also wired the dusty miller. The poppy pods and silver brunia have strong enough stems that they don't need any wiring}
I then used florist tape to assemble the poppy pods and roses. I like to play around with the layering and placement before applying the florist tape.
Next, I added the dusty miller and silver brunia, and placed them behind the roses and poppy pods. I used florist tape to keep them in place. Another tip when assembling boutonnieres, always start taping at the top of the stem, never in the middle or towards the bottom. This is to ensure a sturdy, not floppy boutonniere.
Clip off the uneven stems. Finally, use florist tape one last time and wrap around from the top of the stems to the bottom of the stems.
Lastly, label the boutonniere and apply a pin.
Voila! You've mastered the basics of creating a boutonniere.
